They’re Back!

New “raingardens,” now dubbed “Ballard Natural Drainage,” are returning to Ballard in 2014-2015. According to local mailers, SPU is honing in on blocks surrounding Loyal Heights Elementary and Loyal Heights Community Center.

SPU will host a Community Meeting to discuss this project on June 5th at Northminster Presbyterian Church (7706 25th Ave NW) starting at 6:00 PM.

I’m so disappointed that, after we already fought this a few years ago and proved to SPU that the curbside raingardens don’t work in our neighborhood, they are moving ahead to install them just 4 blocks away, right where parents pick up and drop off their children for school at Loyal Heights Elementary!

If the design is like the ones they tried before, the option for getting kids out of a car and to the school grounds will be:

    1) walk through a ditch to the sidewalk
    2) get out of the car into the street, dodge traffic, and walk to a place where they can cross the ditch to the sidewalk

Neither is a safe option during the hectic pick-up and drop off time at school.

Safety must be a factor for such projects in our neighborhoods and SPU has had a poor track record of taking that into consideration with these projects. It took out community’s outcry last time to raise their awareness that their designs were a drowning hazard.

Please put a stop to this now before money is wasted and lives are endangered.

  3. I encourage you to come talk to me and the project staff tomorrow night, or give us a call/send us an e-mail. The concerns raised here are exactly what we’d like to talk about. We have a goal to make it safer to get to Loyal Height Elementary and we’d like to listen to what you have to say. Thanks.
